There are more AI story apps than there used to be, and they differ in ways that are not obvious from a screenshot. Here is what actually separates them.
A text adventure is a story you read and steer. You read a scene, choose what to do, and the story branches. It is the format of the old choose-your-own-adventure gamebooks and of interactive fiction generally.
What the AI adds varies more than you would expect. In some apps it writes the story itself. In others it voices the characters you speak to, while the story structure is fixed. Some do both. These are genuinely different products, and the difference determines almost everything about how they feel to play.
This decides your privacy and your offline experience. Cloud generation means your prompts leave your device and you need a connection. On-device models mean the conversation never leaves your phone and works on a plane. Many apps use both, for different jobs.
Generation costs the developer real money per story, so most apps put an account and a paywall in front of it. Worth checking whether there is any complete, finished content you can play first — a demo is not the same as an adventure with an ending.
A generated story is unique to you, which is the appeal. A written one has been played through and fixed, which usually means tighter pacing and endings that land. Neither is strictly better. An app that offers both lets you see the difference for yourself.
Endless generation sounds attractive and often is not. Stories that continue indefinitely tend to lose their thread. A designed ending — one you can reach, and reach differently on a second run — is what makes the choices feel like they mattered.
On-device AI features usually need recent hardware. Check what degrades and what breaks. Losing a feature is fine; losing the ability to finish a story is not.
It depends where the AI runs. Anything generated in the cloud needs a connection at the moment of generation. Stories already written and stored on the device can be read offline, and conversations powered by an on-device model work with no connection at all.
